RUSTLERS, RENEGADES, AND ROGUES

First in the Cournoyer Brothers Trilogy

The three eldest brothers of a Lakota Sioux family in 1880’s South Dakota are leading free lives on a large family ranch until the encroachment of modern society and white culture takes over.

After the passing of their father the boys leave Indian Boarding School and the abuses it entailed, joining up with the notorious cattle rustler Jack Sully. Together the Sully Gang steals more than 50,000 head of cattle and innumerable horses from 1885-1915.

During the rustling years, the brothers navigate the unpredictable weather of the prairies, conflicts and close calls with ranchers and settlers, and the growing destruction of their Lakota heritage.

The brothers do their best to keep the “old ways” alive. They respect and honor the culture of their ancestors, while fighting against the fences – literal and figurative – imposed on them by government and modern society. This takes them across South Dakota and into Wyoming, Nebraska, Montana and even Saskatchewan, Canada.
